Carl Melegari

Carl Melegari is a Bristol based artist of Italian and Welsh origin. He is mostly known for his memorable impasto paintings of heads.

His stye of painting has evolved over the years, from earlier more elusive figurative compositions to a very distinct style of mark-making. Exploring a broad spectrum of complimentary colours, Melegari uses a palette knife to produce a heavily worked pictorial surface, rich in texture.

Melegari’s recent alluring paintings focused on the male and female figure invoke a balletic sense of grace and balance. Inspired by Alberto Giacometti’s fragmented approach to the body, Melegari chooses to foreground key figurative elements such as the eye, which he uses as a sign to uncover a strong emotional connection with the subject.
